The Recovery Process/Part II

V. Examination is the fifth stage of the recovery process

A. Examination is an honest investigation of self
1. Total honesty is needed in self-examination
2. All attitudes and behaviors, and how they may need to be changed are included
in the examination stage.
3. Examination includes identifying and establishing priorities which will support recovery.

B. The stage of examination parallels the Step Four Inventory Process of A.A./N.A..
C. Examination is an ongoing, maturing process that may take a lifetime.
D. The perceptions of others is needed in the examination process (i.e. professional, sponsors, etc.).

VI. Changing roles and labels is the sixth stage of the recovery process
A. As I continue in recovery, I will identify myself differently.

1. "I'm a victim."
2. "I'm confused".
3. "I'm an alcoholic/I'm an addict

There are many ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle free of self-defeating behavior. Your recovery plan will be your own creation and will be different from anyone else's. This conversation is meant to give you a starting point and a framework to design your own program. It won't be a finished product when you are done---there will be more questions. It will provide you with a method you can fall back on when things get difficult and confusing.

When you think about your recovery, what do you want to accomplish? Above and beyond stating clean and sober, some things many people want to work toward include control over their actions; self-respect and dignity; peace of mind; the ability to enjoy life; the respect of others; more satisfying relationships; improved health; career progress; and improved financial status. There are many others but I will leave you to list them.

Addiction called Love

There is such a thing as Love Addicts Anonymous. Love addiction comes in many forms. Some love addicts carry a torch for unavailable people. Some love addicts obsess when they fall in love. Some love addicts get addicted to the euphoric effects of romance. Others cannot let go of a toxic relationship even if they are unhappy, depressed, lonely, neglected or in danger Some love addicts are codependent and others are narcissistic. Some love addicts use sex to manage feelings; others are sexually anorexic. What they all have in common is that they are powerless over their distorted thoughts, feelings and behavior when it comes to love, fantasies, and relationships.

Love Avoidance:
At the other end of the continuum is love avoidance, an obsessive/compulsive relational cycle that begins with the child's enmeshment with parents (meaning one or both of the parents has no boundaries wirth the child). The child becomes the support network and provides care for the parents. This concept is best understood by examining the roles a child plays in a dysfunctional family system, such as the family counselor, mediatior, mascot, scapegoat, or hero. Oftentimes, the child may be a surrogate parent to younger siblings. In other situations, "Daddy's little girl" is a situation where the female child is more important to her father than her mother.. The child feels superior to her mother and will later serve as her father's surrogate spouse. At the other end of the spectrum, "Mom's little man" is when the son is more important than the father. As a result the son often feels superior to the father and becomes a surrogate spouse. In these described roles, the child feels very close to the parent, but is actually to close. He has to adapt to much to the needs of the parent and in the adaptation loses a sense of self and spontaneity. As an adult he will feel easily bored and empty inside which drives his need to use risk taking to create intensity. Being enmeshed by a parent creates three toxic ideas in the "Love Avoidant":

* When in a relationship with a needy person the love avoidant is superior. He will assume a parental position, have all the power, and look down on his partner. This is a core self-issue of poor self-esteem and in a relationship it will cause him to be  controlling and disdainful of the partner.

* It is the love avoidant's job totake care of needy people. This is how he knows to be relational. It becomes part of his value system and if he is not taking care of someone in need, he feels guilty. As a core self-issue, it is a dependency or self-care issue. It causes resentment of the partner, as the love avoidant feels oppressed by his perceived responsibility. He too enters relationships out of duty, not love.

* If the love avoidant does not maintain enough distance in a relationship, he will be suffocated. As a result, he uses "walls" to create the distance he needs. As a core issue, this is a boundary problem.

* These three toxic thoughts drive a compulsive relational cycle called "the cycle of love avoidance." The cycle starts with the love avoidant entering a relationship because the other person needs assistance. The prospective partner seems needy and the avoidant appears to enter the relationship to avoid guilt and because it makes him feel good about himself. However, the love Avoidant doesn't actually enter a true relationship. He is hiding behind a "wall of seduction" that causes the prospective partner to feel special, but in reality the Avoidant is simply role-playing. The Avoidant is contemplating the relationship out of duty, not love. The result is resentment at having to work so hard to be in a relationship in which he really doesn't want to participate. He then uses the anger to justify his escape from the duty-bound relationship.

As self-medication, he seeks high intensity to relieve his boredom and make him feel wonderful. He starts risk-taking behavior such as sexually acting out, gambling with money or his life, drinking, drugging, or work addiction. However, following such behavior, he starts to feel guilty because he is not properly caring for his partner. So he returns out of guilt and restarts the entire avoidant cycle. Human tend to be relationally attracted to what is familiar. The Love Addict is attracted to people who are distant and relationally irresponsible, similar to his neglectful parents. The Love Avoidant is compelled to be relational with needy people who put him in a god-like position. It is not unusual to see these two types of people enter into relationships with one another, whereby they often stimulate each other's cycle.

What Addiction Is Not

Addiction is not fun! There are many young and old persons who started out partying, going to the clubs and friends homes. There they would participate in smoking of marijuana and it appeared to be fun, it appeared to make you down and cool. Everyone was doing it. as time went on the substances changed. One of the friends introduced the other to cocaine. And some hesitated but others took a blow and that was the beginning. One blow led to another blow. Now, cocaine is a little bit more expensive than marijuana. So, some people would chip in to get a gram or buy for themselves and share with the others. It appeared to be happening, the "In" thing to do. Substance Abuse is a phenomena that has taken off and taken on a life of its own. It does not matter what your color, creed or age. The old trying to be young and the young trying to be old.

What addiction is not, it first of all is not fun, it is not something you can start and stop as you please, addiction is an ongoing, progressive set of circumstances. It is on and on. Soon as time goes on, one of the crowd brings a new substance to the forefront. It is something that they were doing in secret and when they became unable to afford it they started to share it with their friends, so as to have help coping. The new and different substance was heroin. This drug, heroin is immediately addictive and causes the addict to do many things to get it. Such as, robbing, raping, lying, stealing, cheating and many other things to numerous to name. Heroin becomes the reason for living, it becomes the head of your life. Heroin will not take no for an answer. In the event you try to stop using it. You become physically ill or sick or just plain miserable. When heroin comes into the picture, the fun people who used to use substances together breaks up. The drug is now the only party and it alone decides what you do and who you see. The beginning was easy full of girls and boys who wanted to have a good time. The advent of this peculiar and particular use caused a break in the friendships and the partying together. It was a lonely downward spiral of use, be used and use some more.

What addiction is not, it is not the fun that powder cocaine brought to the party. The use of substance in any form is incredibly sinking. It causes you to only hang out with or relate to other people who are doing what you are doing. The arrival of "crack". A form of cocaine that is smoked. It is referred to as free base in some place and as rock in other places. Crack Cocaine is highly addictive and captivating.. The ritual of cooking the powder back to rock or when it is precooked and bottled up, coping the bottle is a journey in itself. There was one instance where a celebrity set himself on fire trying to cook-up.

What addiction is not, it is not real life. People start to look like the living dead, like the zombies seen in the movies. The attractive lure of cocaine and the seductive way it brings you in, is usually as a party animal having a few drinks with friends and that escalates to another level. Now that I speak of it, let's take a look at having a drink. Having a drink as become synonmous with the barfly and happy hour. This too is seductive and can cause an addiction that is difficult to break, stop, or go on with life as it use to be. Alcohol has a grip of its own and because it is legal and easy to obtain brings many cocaine and heroin addicts into the fold. For others, alcohol alone is enough but it to takes you on a downward spiral. It saps your strength and your will to be ambitious or industrious. As time goes on and you continue to drink alcohol, it is all that you live for, the next drink. Whether it is a forty or a half pint. Does this sound like fun?

What addiction is not, it is not a way to have a woman or a man in your life. Someone who cares and takes care of you. Addiction is not a cure all although some people use it to relieve the pain of whatever. Is there anything that can be done? Once starting to use, all morals and principals are long gone. The growth, the natural progression of time and psychic, physical and social growth stops. In the beginning, no one knows that this is the case.

What addiction is not, it is not the way to the good life, it is not even the enjoyment of life itself. What can be done? There are many things I can suggest. First and foremost, do not experiment with any substances. That would be called prevention for people who are at risk. After the addiction has taken hold, if you do not end up in prison, go to a alcohol and drug treatment center.

Treatment for addiction is available, although most addicts come in kicking and screaming trying not to be separated from their drug of choice. Addiction intervention with the family is one way to address this problem. The addiction has signs and symptoms so well addressed in the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). After consultation, it allows for a formal diagnosis to be made and a suggested mode of treatment.

In a treatment rehab, an addiction counselor will determine, what addiction is or is not and what form of treatment is necessary. Treatment for addiction has spread all over the country, in all of the fifty states. No one, and no place is exempt. There is something called recovery from addiction and it takes many forms this addiction recovery. I have spoken much about what addiction is not. I will later talk about recovery from addiction.

Black Culture vs Drug Culture

What if there was a drug that could chemically induce feelings of upper-classness? It would be a lot like crack. Our society actively cultivates, encourages, and promotes self-actualization, immediate gratification, and ubabashed self-indulgence. Even the most minor pains are quickly, even casually, dismissed with pills and other aids to produce an easy lifestyle absent from struggle.

Addiction is widespread in the African American community. Crack is a very addictve an lethal drug and it  is deceptive in the way that it lures unsuspecting people into the use and participation in the drug culture. Black culture as it is presented in the Afrocentric format is a formidable ally to the Black man and woman who is using drugs to the point of addiction

Advertising campaigns specifically targeted at the African American communities in an attempt to delude them into thinking that smoking or drinking will make them more prestigious, smart, attractive, or popular. Research has shown that African Americans spend an inordinate amounts of time in front of the television set. Therefore, they are disproportionately exposed to television's grandiose, yet false, and ultimately harmful message that grave personal problems can be effectively and efficiently resolved in thirty minutes or less. All these dynamics contribute to the presence of what is unmistakable, "A Drug Culture". Consequently, the provision of recovery and rehabilitation services to drug dependent African American men and women are "stuck" in an environment undeniably influenced by the prevailing drug culture.

Through "God", spirituality, African American Culture base and the community involvement, they can save themselves and their children that are at risk. The need for an Afrocentric philosophy is so great that it is impossible for me not to insist that you turn to a remedy within the treatment community. Families are being destroyed, people no longer resemble live vibrant human beings. Crack addiction has a stranglehold on the Black man or woman who has fell victim to this rock called crack.

The question most often encountered is "why"? Why the need for an Afrocentric philosophy? Why should Africa be at the center? And my question is, why not? Who else would you want to have your center? Africa belongs to Africans or African Americans or African Brazilians. It does not take away from the universality or humanity of man to have a particular culture or history to stand as one's center since all cultures share certain universal traits: but they do not necessarily resemble each other. Afrocentricity resembles the Black man, speaks to him, looks like him, and wants for him what he wants for himself.

In response to the overpowering drug culture and for a safe journey through the Americas. Come to your own center and become free of the westernized culture of self-destruction.

Christian Drug Rehab vs Secular Rehab

Christian drug rehab vs Secular rehab

Author: mattbrindisi

There are many kinds of rehabs available, which treat drug addiction. If the addict is not religious and doesn’t have any religious beliefs ten he has the option of selecting either secular rehabs or Christian drug rehabs. The rehabs are the centers of treatment where the addict is helped by the able staff and experienced professionals in recovering from the addiction.
What are the different possible options available that help an addict recover from drug addiction and how do they differ? This question is frequently encountered by the addict and his or her family members. There are many kinds of treatment centers available for treating an addict of his drug addiction. These rehabs can be broadly classified into secular rehabs, which don’t involve any kind of religious beliefs and teachings of God to help the addict overcome his addiction. The other kind of drug rehabs available is religious drug rehab. These drug rehabs employ various kinds of spiritual programs along with regular medication and medical methods in the treatment of the addict. Many people quit drinking and abusing drugs by using medical and therapeutic treatment methods alone.
Secular rehabs

Secular rehabs are the rehabs where the treatment is carried out only on the basis of medical science, which is good but not the best possible solution for the treatment of drug addicts. General medication alone cannot help the addict recover from the drug addiction completely. The main point which the secular rehabs forget when they design their medication programs is that drug addiction is a illness related not only to the physical body but also to the mind of the addict.

Various kinds of treatment procedures are employed in these treatment centers. Treatment procedures like detox treatment, pharmaceutical treatment etc is provided at these centers.

Usage of tranquillizers that help the addict calm down and usage of diet and vitamins that can help the addict have a more healthy body are the most common processes that are involved in detox treatment. The addict experiences many kinds of withdrawal symptoms during the period of detox treatment that could be very harmful.

Pharmaceutical treatment that is employed at these centers use high doses of medicines to treat the addicts which may lead the addict to dependency on medicines. This type of treatment may also lead to the addict recover from drugs and get addicted to medicines. Secular rehabs surely help the addicts treated from drug addiction but in many cases the fail in treating the way which would keep the addict away from drugs his whole life.
Christian drug rehabs

The other kinds of treatment centre available that can help the addict recover from the drug addiction are Christian drug rehabs. These rehabs are named in such a way because they use Christian ways of treatment along with the new treatment procedures to help the addict overcome his or her addiction. In Christian drug rehabs all the working staff believes that a healthy mind is required for an individual to overcome this serious addiction.

The treatment procedures that are designed in these rehabs help the addict recover from the addiction in a medical as well as spiritual way. The teachings of Jesus Christ and the holy scriptures of Bible are used to heal the addict in a way that would help not only in overcoming the addiction but also in emerging as a better human being. These rehabs also include programs such as individual counseling, group counseling, pastoral counseling, church visits etc to help the addict get rid of his or her addiction.

The programs used to treat the addict at these rehabs are very effective and help the addict overcome their addiction forever. The Christian drug rehabs also take the impact of drugs not only on the addict but also on his or her family members and friends into consideration and allow their active participation in various activities. The group counseling sessions help the addict get rid of suicidal tendencies and feelings of guilt and shame.

The Christian drug rehabs treat the addict in such a way that he never feels that he or she is away in some rehabilitation center. The addicts who have taken treatment at the rehabs do not undergo any kind of pressure due to the Christian drug rehabs. The peaceful and the serene environment that is provided by these rehabs help the addict gain tranquility and control over his or her life.

Where To Find Information About Drug Addiction

Where to Find Information about Drug Addiction

Author: Mervin Hester

If you suspect a loved one of having a drug problem, where do you go to find information?  Information on drug addiction can be found in a variety of places. Even if you are the one with the addiction - when you have as much information as possible about this disease, you will be better equipped to deal with it and overcome it.

First and foremost, start with the Internet.  There is so much information on the worldwide web; you can even get a little bit overwhelmed.  However, it's usually better to have too much information rather than not enough.  Do a quick search on your favorite search engine for "drug addiction" and then spend some time reading through the websites you are given.

Look for books on the subject of drug addiction.  Books contain a lot of relevant information that can help when addiction is part of your life.  There are even some great downloadable e-books on the Internet that can give you instant information about the disease of drug addiction.

Go to your local library and see what resources they have available.  Libraries offer more than books these days.  They have access to documentaries, pamphlets, and magazines regarding drug addiction and recovery.  They also often can provide more extensive information regarding specific drug addictions like alcoholism or methamphetamine use.

Check with your local police department.  Most cities have police personnel who are specifically in charge of drug information in the schools such as the D.A.R.E. program.  They are always very eager to share information with you about drug addiction in hopes that spreading the word will help curb the problem.

Talk to a doctor about drug addiction whether it's you who has the problem or someone you love.  Physicians have much of the latest information regarding drug addiction and dependence.  If, for some strange reason, they don't, they will be able to direct you to someone or someplace who has the information you are looking for.

Many churches also have extensive information regarding drug addiction - especially if those churches host 12 step programs.  Talk to the clergy person who presides over the church and ask their advice.  Even though they are religious people, they are not blind to the problems of society and often have some very pertinent advice to offer regarding drug addiction and recovery.

When you are dealing with a drug addiction - yours or another person's - having all the information you can get can make the difference between a successful recovery and one that is fraught with obstacles and blockages.

Finding Support Groups for Drug Addiction

Finding Support Groups for Drug Addiction

Author: Mervin Hester

When you are suffering from a drug addiction, finding a support group is so important to your recovery.  Support groups can give you new insight into your addiction, but more importantly, they can provide you with strength and courage to go ahead and beat your addiction.

What types of support groups are out there?  There are many.  Alcoholics Anonymous has been the foundation for many offshoots that deal with all sorts of addiction problems.  Narcotics Anonymous deals with people who have addictions to narcotic drugs, Al-Anon helps family members who are trying to cope with a loved one who has an addiction, and there are many more.

Many churches offer faith-based support groups that deal with addictions of all types.  You don't necessarily have to be a member of that particular church to attend their support group either.  All you have to do is ask to join.  Faith-based support groups are generally very accepting of non-members, and when you ask for their help, they are usually there to welcome you with open arms.

Drug addiction is a difficult vice to overcome.  When you have the help of a therapist or counselor, you will be better off.  Ask your counselor if he or she can recommend an appropriate support group for you to attend.  They usually have all the information you'll need to guide you toward one that is right for you.

Hospitals also will offer support groups for drug addiction.  Contact the administrator and ask about what they have to offer and whether or not their groups are ones that could help you on the road to recovery.

Don't discount online support groups that address drug addiction.  When you do a simple Internet search, you will find all sorts of places that offer online support for your addiction.  These groups will have chat times where you can discuss the problems you are having and often also have message boards where you can post questions and concerns.

When looking for a support group to treat your drug addiction, you should find one that makes you feel comfortable.  Try to find one that has members around your own age.  It's often easier to talk to people who are your peers - that means age appropriate peers.  If you are a teen struggling with drug addiction, it's generally not a good idea to be in a support group with mostly middle-aged people.

Finding a support group for your drug addiction is such a huge component of your recovery, it should not be overlooked.  Look around and pick the right one for you.  And know that you're not alone in your addiction - or your recovery!

Best Way to Quit Smoking - Chantix Friend or Foe

Best way to Quit Smoking - Chantix Friend or Foe?

Author: Vcoach

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention an estimated 44.5 million adults in the United States smoke cigarettes and may suffer from a nicotine addiction. But, what exactly is a smoking or nicotine addiction? Well, the medical community has defined a smoking addiction as an uncontrollable dependence on cigarettes to the point where stopping causes emotional distress! These very same proponents are generally advocates of the addiction disease model, which promotes the hypothesis of chemical dependency and the affects of substances on the brain. Let's examine that hypothesis for a moment! If discontinuing smoking causes emotional distress, is not rational to conclude that the emotional stress was present before the addiction occurred? Furthermore, is it not also rational to believe that the emotional distress is the direct cause of the addiction? In my opinion, absolutely, unequivocally yes!!
The questions are; what is the root cause of this emotional distress, and what role does nicotine play in alleviating that distress? First, let's examine the affects of nicotine on the body and mind. It is true that nicotine is a psychoactive drug that stimulates electrical activity of the brain. And, it also has a calming effect, especially at times of stress. As with every addiction, smoking merely diverts people from their emotional pain! While everyday stresses can exacerbate the situation they are not the main cause of the emotional pain that needs to be calmed. Generally, underlying emotional trauma caused by family dysfunction is at the root of the addiction. This emotional trauma batters the self-esteem and self-confidence levels which lessens the ability to cope with everyday stresses, whereby causing anxiety. So, in my opinion, liberating oneself from that anxiety is the key to nicotine addiction freedom. Consequently, when you remove the anxiety smoking becomes repulsive!

The medical community's response is a direct contrast to the underpinning cause of nicotine addiction and has closely followed the disease hypothesis with the introduction of the drug Chantix. Chantix was released by the FDA in the United States (in June 2006.) The drug is believed to block nicotine from reaching receptors in the brain whereby reducing the so called cravings to smoke. In addiction, Chantix is a partial agonist that activates release of 35 to 60% of the dopamine that nicotine would have caused to flow if sitting on the exact same receptors. This release of dopamine is believed to produce the same emotional effect that nicotine delivers without the damaging effects of smoking. Dopamine has many functions in the brain, including important roles in behavior and cognition, motor activity, motivation and reward, sleep, mood, attention, and learning. So, let me get this straight! The solution for overcoming a nicotine addiction is to acknowledge emotional distress as a component, dismiss it, and then trade one psychoactive substance for another!

Sadly, prior to the release of Chantix there was clear evidence that it caused side effects such as nausea, mood alterations, drowsiness, vivid dreams, and allergic rash in up to one-third of patients. But, that isn't even the half of it! Now, after about 4 million smokers have taken Chantix, about 40 suicides have been reported to the FDA associated with Chantix and about 400 cases of suicidal thinking or behavior from this psychoactive drug. The Food and Drug Administration issued the following warning on February 1, 2008:

FDA ALERT: FDA is issuing this Alert to highlight important revisions to the WARNINGS and PRECAUTIONS sections of the full prescribing information for Chantix regarding serious neuropsychiatric symptoms. Serious neuropsychiatric symptoms have occurred in patients taking Chantix. These symptoms include changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal ideation, and attempted and completed suicide. While some patients may have experienced these types of symptoms and events as a result of nicotine withdrawal, some patients taking Chantix who experienced serious neuropsychiatric symptoms and events had not yet discontinued smoking. In most cases, neuropsychiatric symptoms developed during Chantix treatment, but in others, symptoms developed following withdrawal of Chantix therapy.

Chantix has been promoted as having a 44% success rate at 12 weeks. However, that figure is really rather meaningless since half of Chantix clinical trial users who successfully quit smoking for 12 weeks while using it had relapsed to smoking within a year. Source (whyquit.com)

The Real Reason you Smoke

The key is to realize that nicotine does have a calming effect on the mind. As with all addictions, smoking merely diverts people from their emotional pain or distress. While everyday stress can exacerbate the situation it is not the primary cause of the emotional pain that needs to be calmed. Generally, underlying emotional trauma caused by family dysfunction is at the root of the addiction. This emotional trauma batters the self-esteem and self-confidence levels which lessens the ability to cope with everyday stress or in the case of smoking, anxiety. Therefore the key to overcoming a nicotine addiction is to restore self-esteem by liberating oneself from the dysfunctional patterns that cause anxiety. Plain and simple, when you remove the anxiety and restore self-esteem smoking will become repulsive.

Take a moment to ask yourself a couple of questions; what has caused the anxiety that you need to calm with smoking, and why does smoking make you feel better?

So, if you want to crumple up your last pack and walk away forever, you need to get to the bottom of the emotional pain and anxiety that provokes you to calm it by smoking.

Best wishes,

Marijuana withdrawal symptoms. Insomnia, anxiety, iritability, headache...

Marijuana Addiction And Withdrawal

Marijuana is addictive, it can limit your potential, increase your risks for a number of psychiatric disorders, and there is a withdrawal syndrome associated with the drug.

Marijuana today is not what it was even a couple of decades ago, and parents may be underestimating the threat that marijuana poses to today's teens.

The potency of marijuana has increased many-fold in the last couple of decades alone, and it is as much as 6 times as strong as the marijuana of the 60's and 70's. With increased potency unfortunately comes an increased risk for social and health problems and addiction, and with addiction, the inevitable need to detox off of the drug.

Addictions professionals now recognize marijuana as an addictive drug, and there is a documented syndrome of withdrawal symptoms that occur when marijuana addicts try to break free from their habit. The intensity of these marijuana withdrawal symptoms may not be as great as with drugs like heroin, and they may not be as dangerous as a detox off of alcohol; but they are real, they are unpleasant, and they do pose a threat to recovery.

What are the symptoms of marijuana withdrawal?

Marijuana withdrawal symptoms can include insomnia, irritability, aggression, nausea, a lack of appetite, headaches and very strong cravings for the drug. So strong are the cravings and so uncomfortable are the withdrawal symptoms that many people cannot get past the initial few days of intense withdrawal, and use marijuana again if only to make the symptoms of withdrawal go away.

Marijuana abuse and addiction is the number one reason for a teen entry into drug treatment or drug rehab, and so potent is today's pot that many thousands of kids have developed addictions strong enough to require residential treatment, and untold more thousands have developed as yet untreated addictions.

Heavy marijuana use brings an increased risk of present and future psychiatric problems, including depression, anxiety and psychosis, is linked to certain cancers, is linked to developmental delays, and is strongly and negatively linked to academic performance.

How to beat an addiction to marijuana

The reality is that an occasional joint is very unlikely to do much damage, and many people can use marijuana recreationally at this occasional level. But when recreational use becomes regular abuse, and possibly addiction, the detrimental impacts of marijuana on quality of life and potential become very evident.

Many thousands of kids (and adults) need drug treatment each year for assistance bettering an addiction to marijuana, if someone you love is having difficulty reducing their usage or quitting altogether, there are programs and therapies available, and these can be very helpful for anyone committed to quitting.

It is not unusual for anyone to need professional help when dealing with an addiction, and with marijuana addiction as with any dependency, it is unlikely to go away on its own; and the sooner it's dealt with, the better the ultimate prognosis.

Breaking An Addiction To Chewing Tobacco With NLP

Breaking An Addiction To Chewing Tobacco With NLP

Author: Alan B. Densky

The smokeless tobacco addiction is every bit as deadly as an addiction to cigarettes - maybe even more so. In fact, many experts believe that it is even more insidious. Part of the problem is that influential sports heroes have glamorized the use of chew. Many have started their habit as early as the age of nine. And by the time that many of these kids turn 18, they are overcome by mouth and throat cancer, and may be dying.

There is nothing quite as ugly as a face ravaged by tumors or cancer, except maybe how the victim's face looks after having surgery to amputate the jawbone, lips, or tongue. Unfortunately, in most cases the surgical massacre of the victim's face really doesn't matter, because they are dead within a year anyway.

Doctors tell us that the physical part of the Nicotine addiction is broken after abstaining for seven days. However, the psychological addiction is much stronger and takes a lot more time and effort to overcome making it difficult to quit smokeless tobacco.

There are 3 distinct components to the addiction to tobacco. Two of the elements are mental, and one part is physical.

Part A: YOU DIP FOR RELAXATION AND PLEASURE.

When you were an infant and you became upset, your mother would put a nipple into your mouth to pacify you. You would get distracted, become peaceful, and often go to sleep. That scenario was repeated dozens of times so that your unconscious mind was programmed: When something goes into your mouth, you get relaxation and pleasure from it.

Now that you are a grownup, if you feel anxious or tense, you crave something in your mouth for relaxation and pleasure - dip!

Part B: CHEWING TOBACCO IS A CONDITIONED RESPONSE.

Remember Pavlov? Every time that he fed his dogs he would ring a bell. After several repetitions, he could just ring the bell, and that would trigger the dogs to salivate.

When you connect together dipping with any other behavior, the other behavior will trigger cravings for tobacco and a urge to chew.  This is called a conditioned response.

For example: If you chew when you play baseball, you will automatically get an urge to chew each time you play baseball.

Here is exactly how this conditioned response gets programmed into your unconscious: If a person dips tobacco and simultaneously drives a car, the mind takes a snapshot of the dip in the hand, and links it to the image of the steering wheel, dashboard, or view out the windshield, etc.. Thereafter, every time the person drives the car, the unconscious mind fills in the missing part of the picture. It flashes an image of the chew in the hand coming towards the mouth, and the dipper gets a craving for smokeless.

You may not be consciously aware of the mental picture of the smokeless, because it may only be at the unconscious level of mind. Just as you are unaware of what you are seeing through your peripheral vision until someone or something draws your attention to it. But the image is there, creating a craving for chewing tobacco.

Part C: THERE IS A PHYSICAL ADDICTION TO NICOTINE, BUT . . .

I've worked face-to-face with several thousand people for tobacco cessation and I give you my personal guarantee that the physical addiction is the weakest part of the addiction to smokeless tobacco. In fact, I believe that it is only ten percent of the chewing habit. Ninety percent of the dipping habit are the mental and emotional parts! (Parts A and B).

HERE IS WHAT THIS MEANS TO A PERSON WHO DIPS AND WHO WANTS TO QUIT.

What this means is that when you eliminate the feeling of tension that causes you to chew smokeless for relaxation and pleasure (Part A) . . . and if you can extinguish the conditioned response of feeling cravings for smokeless tobacco when watching television, driving, or finishing a meal, etc. (Part B) . . . then you can give up tobacco without needing willpower, and without having to suffer from withdrawal symptoms or gaining weight.

Hypnosis will make it easy to break the addiction to smokeless because it takes care of Parts A & B! Here is how:

Part A is where dippers chew smokeless tobacco for relaxation and pleasure. It's a person's thoughts that create feelings of stress. Moreover, people constantly watch mental movies in their mind's eye. If the movie is negative, it creates a feeling of anxiety.

We can use different hypnotic methods to re-program the unconscious to rapidly take those anxiety producing mental pictures, and automatically exchange them for relaxation producing mental pictures and movies. This creates relaxation and pleasure, and obliterates the anxiety that creates the oral cravings and compulsions for chewing.

Because of the elimination of feelings of anxiety, the person who is quitting does not feel the compulsion or need to substitute food in place of the smokeless tobacco. So quitting without weight gain is possible.

Quitting the addiction to smokeless tobacco is very similar to overcoming the addiction to food, cigarettes, and nail biting. I have many additional original articles on these topics in my free NLP & hypnosis article library.

Part B is where people chew because dipping smokeless tobacco becomes a conditioned response to many different activities and locations. Remember in the earlier example how smoking became unconsciously associated with other activities and environments so that each time people get into that activity or environment, the mind flashes an image of smokeless, and the image of the smokeless triggers cravings for smokeless?

There are stop smokeless hypnosis, and quit smokeless NLP techniques that can quickly eliminate those conditioned responses so that your unconscious will lose the cravings for chew, and the compulsion to dip. As a matter of fact, you can even get a compulsion to reject chewing tobacco.

IN SUMMATION

In summation, when we utilize certain NLP methods, it becomes very easy to stop chewing tobacco without weight gain or having to suffer from withdrawal. And many of these methods like video hypnosis and NLP don't even depend on post-hypnotic suggestions. They depend on training the subconscious mind to use the same mental processes that the mind is using to create the addiction to dipping smokeless tobacco, to eliminate the mental addiction.

Massage Therapy Helps Addicted Produce Good Chemicals, Expel Bad

Massage Therapy Helps Addicted Produce Good Chemicals, Expel Bad

Author: Brandon Thomas

Substance abuse is a serious problem that costs the U.S. an estimated 500 billion dollars annually in increased crime, lost work, treatment and social welfare programs.  While there is no standard cause or cure for addiction, there are psychological, physical and emotional components that must be addressed in order to encourage a successful recovery.  Massage therapy has shown promise in helping recovering addicts to address and manage these issues, while promoting a healthy method of self-care.

Stress, whether internal or external in origin, is a major obstacle to the recovery process.  Stress can cause feelings of anxiety and lead to a sense of being overwhelmed.  This compels the individual to seek an escape, which often results in the downward spiral of addiction.  Many studies have been undertaken to prove the efficacy that massage has on stress reduction.  The Touch Research Institute in Miami has conducted many groundbreaking studies, and analysis of the data concludes that massage has a definitive impact on the amelioration of cravings, depression, agitation, stress and pain.

Stress hormones, such as cortisol, and neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, play a powerful role in addiction.  An individual’s reaction to emotional stress can cause them to start abusing substances, which activates the release of dopamine or keeps it from being reabsorbed.  Prolonged drug abuse further weakens the individual’s ability to negotiate stressful situations, and the release of cortisol can cause the addict to experience troubling emotions.  In the detoxification process, dopamine levels are very low, which can drive the addict toward relapse.

The importance of neurochemical balance during the recovery process is incontrovertible.  A 1998 Touch Research Institute study revealed that a consistent regimen of massage generated a lasting increase in dopamine levels.  This is an important finding, as addicts are accustomed to using substances in order to experience pleasure.  After prolonged periods of drug use, the body ceases to produce its own endorphins.  During the detoxification process, there is a period of time that elapses before the body begins to produce endorphins again.  This can be a period of vulnerability for the recovering addict, sometimes resulting in a relapse.

A Norwegian study published in 1989 showed that massage therapy caused a 16 percent increase in the beta-endorphin levels measured in the blood.  The ability of massage to increase the release of endorphins empowers the recovering addict to feel pleasure without using drugs.

Massage also has physical benefits that aid in addiction recovery.  Increased circulation and improved lymph drainage help to re-nourish tissues and expel toxins, which aids in the detoxification process as a whole.

It is important for addicts to recognize and control the triggers that lead them to want to seek an escape.  Massage improves body awareness and helps to identify where tension is being held.  It also helps the patient to negotiate feelings of anxiety and cravings by bringing to light one’s emotions and patterns of resistance.  The improved sense of self-awareness that massage provides helps recovering addicts to have a foothold in the present while experiencing feelings of well-being, and at the same time an awareness that pleasure can be experienced while they are drug-free.

Over the course of addiction treatment and recovery, it is not unusual for the patient to feel a division between mind and body.  Massage can help to reunite the mind, body and spirit, helping those recovering from addiction to feel whole again.

If You are seeking treatment for PCP addiction, Florida PCP rehab is where you should head to

If you are seeking treatment for PCP addiction, Florida PCP rehab is where you should head to.

Author: Alice Campbell

For PCP addicts in the state of Florida, a Florida drug treatment center is the best choice for beating the addiction. Much like any drug or substance abuse, PCP addiction slowly, but surely, destroys the body and the mind of the person. If you are ready to get help for PCP addiction, Florida PCP rehab can help you when you are ready. This white crystalline powder (in pure form) is an addictive drug. Though the main purpose of developing PCP or Phenyl Cyclohexyl Piperidine was to create an anesthetic, today PCP is used to other nefarious reasons.

When in 1959, Parke-Davis developed this synthetic drug, little was known about its mind altering properties. However, once this fact was established, it was found unsuitable for people and was permitted to be used by veterinarians only. By 1960s it could be obtained as pills, though it didn’t become popular as a drug until 1970s, by when it was available in powder form and thus could be smoked, snorted, or injected.

What is PCP?

PCP or phencyclidine is a synthetically developed drug. It was first made available in 1950s to be used as an anesthetic. However, because patients complained about addiction, agitation, delusions, and other symptoms it was discontinued.

PCP, in pure form, is a white colored powder. It is easily soluble in alcohol or water and can often be identified because of its distinctive sour chemical taste. Today, PCP is mixed with dyes and sold in the illegal drug market in form of tablets, pills, capsules, and different colored powders. Some of PCP’s many street names include “angel dust”, “wack”, “rocket fuel,” and “ozone.” Oftentimes, PCP is combined with marijuana to create a drug known as “Killer joints” and “crystal super-grass.” This range of street names for this drug indicates the often bizarre and unpredictable effects warranted by use of this drug. If PCP is used for a period of time, it leads to PCP addiction. PCP addiction can be dangerous and you must check into a known Florida PCP rehab center or Florida drug treatment center to overcome this addiction.

PCP Addiction

As mentioned above, PCP is very addictive. Most often regular PCP use leads to addiction that induces symptoms such as cravings and a neurotic desire for this drug. However, it is also seen that if people use PCP knowingly once, they won’t use it again. But many others use PCP as it ‘makes’ them feel powerful, strong, invulnerable, and the numbing effect it has on their minds.

PCP Treatment
At a Florida drug treatment center your PCP addiction can be treated under expert medical supervision. The drug’s disastrous psychological effects are seldom a pleasant sight and addicts undergoing treatment for addiction often turn suicidal or violent when they can’t have their next dose. Those undergoing treatment for PCP addiction at Florida PCP rehab must never be left alone!

The Effects of PCP

Some of the physiological effects related to PCP abuse are:

1.    Increased breathing
2.    Significantly higher BP and Pulse
3.    Shallow Breathing
4.    Excessive Sweating
5.    Muscular coordination Loss

However, excessive or large doses of PCP can lead to

1.    Vomiting
2.    Nausea
3.    Sudden drop in BP, Pulse, and breathing rate
4.    Drooling
5.    Dizziness

Remember, PCP addiction can and MUST be treated only at a good PCP rehab. Florida residents must choose a reputable Florida drug treatment center or Florida PCP rehab for their loved one.

Have you considered a Florida PCP Rehab ? You can get yourself treated and get rid of the dependency on PCP by entering a program at a good Florida drug treatment center to ensure that you start living a healthy and normal life.

What Does It Mean to Be an Addiction Counselor

What Does It Mean to Be an Addiction Counselor?

Author: Kelli

With the number of jobs increasing faster than people are graduating from counseling programs, now could be the right time to enter this worthwhile profession.

What Does an Addiction Counselor Do?
Two types of counselors deal with addictions: mental health counselors and substance abuse counselors. Mental health counselors usually help individuals or groups with a wider variety of issues including depression, stress, and sometimes addiction or substance abuse.

Substance abuse counselors focus their entire practice on people with addictions. Their clients may have problems with drugs, alcohol, gambling, or even eating disorders. A lot of times they hold group sessions for addicts or their families, or run programs dedicated to preventing addictions.

Where Do Addiction Counselors Work?
A wide variety of facilities employ addiction counselors. Those that employ the most include:
•    Outpatient Care Centers
•    Residential Mental Retardation, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Facilities
•    Individual and Family Services
•    General Medical and Surgical Hospitals

Other industries employ far fewer professionals, but offer higher salaries:
•    Insurance Carriers
•    Elementary and Secondary Schools
•    Specialty Hospitals (except Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Hospitals)
•    Colleges, Universities, and Professional Schools

Local government is the one industry that makes the top 5 list in both categories.

Working hours can also vary widely depending on where you work. Some counselors work evening and weekend hours to accommodate people with full-time jobs, others may work more traditional hours.

How Do You Become an Addiction Counselor?
Both education and licensing requirements vary by state, especially if you want to become a substance abuse counselor. In most states, a different agency or board governs them than the one that governs all other counselors. For instance, substance abuse counselors may only need a high school diploma plus counselor certification. By contrast, other counselors need a master's degree, up to 2-years of supervised clinical experience, and a passing score on a state-recognized exam to obtain a license.

In any counseling field, you can choose to take an exam to receive national certification through the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). It's not mandatory, but it does indicate to employers a certain level of proficiency.

The Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC) offers several other optional certifications specifically for addiction counselors. There are certificate programs focusing on drugs and alcohol, tobacco, and adolescent addictions. Finally, the Master Addiction Counselor certification is for those counselors who have a master's degree plus three years of supervised experience. Again, none of these are required for licensing but they can advance your career.

Job Prospects and Salaries for Addiction Counselors
While job prospects are excellent and growing rapidly, people don't enter this profession to make huge amounts of money. The median earnings for addiction counselors in 2006 were $34,040, considerably lower than those of psychologists. Addiction counseling is an easier field to enter, however, with generally lower education requirements. Salaries are higher at the top employers, with mean annual wages at $42,430 for local government and mean salaries over $49,000 for those employed at elementary and secondary schools or with insurance carriers.

People who enter this profession can be proud of their work, helping individuals and loved ones deal with the difficulties of addictions and hopefully overcome them.

How To See Addiction In A New Light

How To See Addiction In A New Light

Author: Susan Living

“Addiction” is a nasty word. When we hear it we get flashes of sad, cliched images and we think “no, not me. I’m not addicted. I’m not an addict. I’ve got my life together.”

According to the dictionary, addiction is “the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, to such an extent that it’s cessation causes severe trauma”. Perhaps we can be better served by redefining it as simply “if we don’t have it or if we don’t do it, we miss it”.

We’ve got cigarettes, drugs and alcohol to depend on. There’s gambling addiction, shopping addiction and sex addiction. We can be addicted to food, addicted to work, addicted to television and addicted to exercise. We laugh about our chocolate addiction and overlook our caffeine dependency (but I only drink one cup per day!) without realising that these can be just as dangerous and damaging to our sense of inner strength and how we perceive ourselves.

On a more subtle level we have addiction and dependency in relationships and on the drama and patterns we play out again and again. Are we addicted to the need to be seen as always right, always strong, always perfect? Are we dependent on other’s approval and do we need it to be happy? Are we addicted to the illusion that we are in control of our lives? That we can control what other’s think of us? That we can control our children or our lovers?

Whether physical, psychological or emotional, addiction and dependency always serve us in some way, for some brief moment in time. If we consider addiction again as “when we don’t have it, we miss it”, can we observe discomfort within when our sense of “control” is taken away from us; when our morning routine is broken; when we are cut off in traffic or when people don’t behave the way we want them to? We are all addicted to our own point of view and our own way of looking at the world and as with all addictions, it is not until the consequences get too much that we think to change.

So, we’re all addicted to something but what do we do about it? Get addicted to something better of course! If we drink alcohol every day we could discover the incredible benefits of exercise, if we use Valium, we may find meditation to soothe the mind and slow down the speed of our thoughts and if control is our drug of choice, we work on developing acceptance of what is. Society often tells us when our dependencies reach dangerous levels but ultimately it is our own inner experience that tells us when and how to change our lives - we simply need to listen.

Conservative Radio Host's Prescription Drug Addiction Story

Conservative Radio Host's Prescription Drug Addiction Story

Author: Damian Sofsian

In recent years, the prescription drug addictions of many public figures have come to light.  One of the most tragic personal prescription drug addiction stories in recent years is that of radio commentator Rush Limbaugh.  He achieved a level of fame, wealth, and influence that most people would envy, but he dealt with a privately devastating prescription drug addiction.

Rush Limbaugh is a prominent conservative talk show host and author.  Around 20 million listeners tune into his radio show Monday through Friday.  He wrote several books that have become bestsellers and have sold millions of copies.  His conservative opinions (including calls for personal responsibility and clean living) and quick wit made him a national superstar; many people were shocked when it developed that he was addicted to drugs, himself.

In October of 2003, Palm Beach County Police linked Rush Limbaugh to the illegal black market of prescription drugs.  Limbaugh admitted that he had become addicted to prescription pain medication several years earlier, when he underwent a spinal surgery.  The surgery was unsuccessful and the radio commentator continued to experience excruciating pain in his lower back and neck.  He claimed that he checked himself into treatment centers on two previous occasions to try to quit using the pain pills.

Though Limbaugh spoke out against drug use many times on his radio broadcast, he came clean about his own problems soon after the story broke in other news outlets.  He made no excuses for his addiction and entered a treatment center for a third and final time.

Rush Limbaugh has since returned to his radio show and claims that he is now drug free, but the ordeal lost him the respect of some of his former listeners and provided those who disagree with his views evidence that he is a hypocrite.

While Rush Limbaugh recovered relatively quickly from his addiction, he went through many hard times before being able to cure his addiction, and the severe hearing loss he suffered was likely a result of the drugs he was taking.  The hearing loss seems to have been adequately resolved with the use of a cochlear implant.  However, many personal prescription drug stories do not end as well as Limbaugh's; some end in death.

SMS Texting Addiction: When Texting Never Stops

Article Source: http://www.articlealley.com/article_471940_15.html

AbSMS Texting Addiction: When Texting Never Stops

Author: teodolfo clearsms

With the proliferation and widespread adoption of SMS technology comes problems unheard of before. One such problem is texting addiction. It was reported that a Scandinavian therapy center, has treated around 60 addicts since 1998 and this number should have more than doubled by today.

Asia has not been spared either. According to Telecoms Korea, 3 out of 10 Korean high school students who carry mobile phones are reported to be addicted to mobile phones. The report also added, a big 21% of 270 high school students carrying mobile phones answered that they feel uneasy when their mobile phones are not in their hands and 8% of them said that they feel very irritated without mobile phones. 10% of the the students who responded already reported of soreness in the shoulder or wrist. This is repetitive strain injury - pressing tiny keyboards of mobile phones causes poor blood circulation and soreness in the shoulder.

The immediate effect of texting addiction, called by some as compulsive text messaging, is repetitive strain injury. This dries out the lubricating fluid between tendons of your hands, shoulders and wrists. Those showing this type of addiction are also prone to depression, anxiousness and sleep disorder, aside from the monetary effects to the person and his/her family.

Most people affected by this technology addiction are still on their denial stage claiming there is no such thing as texting addiction. In the early days of marijuana and cocaine, addiction also went unrecognized until people realized they were addicted into it and it was already too late for them to respond logically.

Why are people quick to look down on alcoholics or drug addicts, but then go out and spend 12 hours in Internet chatrooms?  Compulsive text messaging are sending people to clinics for treating their technology addictions. And this number is rising.

The World Health Organization has defined addiction as a pathological relationship with a mood-altering substance or experience that has life damaging consequences. So this means an addiction need not be with a mood-altering substance like marijuana or alcohol but it could also be an activity like Internet chatting or SMS text messaging. People should start getting serious about this problem. Somebody close to you may be suffering from it but you refuse to recognize its existence. Learn to be aware of the common symptoms like denial, tolerance, withdrawal, obsession, compulsion, and isolation. These symptoms are common in almost all addictions.

Everyday, we've seen new SMS applications introduced into the market. The market for SMS texting is getting more profitable intended to make us grasp as much of this technology in our everday existence. The more SMS texting becomes a part of us, the more addicting it will become, the more problems we will have to deal with in the future. Simply, treat technology as a tool and never an extension of our lives. As long as we keep on that perspective, chances of being manipulated by these latest gadgets, gizmos and applications will be slim.

The First Step To Treating Gambling Addiction

The First Step To Treating Gambling Addiction

The words gambling addiction are probably no alien to most people. Even if you are have not tried to gamble, or isn’t a self confessed gambling addict, you have certainly heard of people who have tried this act at least once in their whole lifetime or those who have been overruled by it. Whatever the case may be, gambling addiction is certainly something serious.

Most people think that gambling addiction is something that one should be ashamed of. This is probably the very reason why most gambling addicts try to deny that they are one or at least try to cover up their addiction with gambling by telling others and even themselves that their act of gambling is simply a means to pass time. Even they know that they are fooling themselves, but who could blame them? Other than being discounted by society, gambling addicts would much rather deny the obvious truth to themselves and fit in other than admitting and being considered an outcast in the society.

Of course, those people who are brave enough to come forward and admit that they are addicted to gambling are doing themselves a great favor. True, everyone in the society, or worse, even their family members might think and look at them differently, but fact of the matter is, admitting that you are indeed a gambling addict is one of the greatest things you can do to yourself.

In order for a gambling addict to be able to treat this serious condition, the first thing that they should do is to admit that they indeed gambling addict. As absurd as it may seem, admission can be equated to surrender. If a gambling addict is able to admit his addiction, this automatically means that he is prepared to do something about it.

Although it isn’t very safe to generalize, most people who admit that they are indeed addicted to gambling do so because they are now prepared to do something about it. Even if it takes as much courage to admit this very serious condition, this is actually the best thing that one can do to treat the condition.

The thing is, there is no rush in preparing oneself to turn the wheel around. When you are ready to admit that you are addicted to gambling and when you are ready to do something about it, keep in mind that the whole world is ready to accept you.

Internet Pornography Addiction in Christie Brinkley Custody Case

Internet Pornography Addiction in Christie Brinkley Custody Case

Author: Ed Opperman

By now everyone has heard about the scandalous details in the Peter Cook, Christie Brinkley divorce and child custody case. But if you haven't seen the news coverage the short version goes like this. Peter Cook, Christie Brinkly's husband, reportedly had an Internet porn addiction and was reportedly spending up to $3000 a month on Internet porn sites and fetish dating sites called  Adult Friend Finder. Mr Cook has admitted to masturbating while in an Internet video camera while another member of this online dating web site watched.

Ms Brinkley was able to obtain the billing records for these Internet dating services and admit them as evidence into her custody case. The judge was able to consider this evidence and ultimately awarded sole custody of the couples two children to Ms Brinlkey.

Being awarded sole custody in a child custody case is considered a huge victory. Especially in cases where there is no evidence of criminal activity, physical or sexual abuse or substance abuse such and drug or alcohol addictions. It would appear that other than an admission by Mr Cook that he had an affair with a very young employee, the only mark used against him was his Internet Porn addiction.

Not everyone involved in custody battles will get the same day in court as Ms Brinkley. The average person simply does not have the money and notoriety to get a fair trial in court. Most people involved in a Family Court custody hearing will get a brief review of their case and a rushed order from a judge filled with errors and inequity. Most people would agree that the Family Court system is flawed and in the end it's always the children that suffer.

There are cost effective resources that the average person can utilize when involved in a child custody case and they suspect their spouse may have an Internet porn addiction. There are online investigation services that can take the suspected parents email address's and search all the online dating services until they locate the personal ad memberships of the other parent. These investigations will also uncover social networking sites like Myspace and Friendster and will include some porn sites also. As we see in the Brinkley vs Cook case, evidence of a porn addiction or participation in sites with a sexual fetish like Adult Friend Finder can influence the outcome of a custody case.

An online dating service investigation can uncover some very extreme sexual fetishes such as bondage, auto asphyxiation and self mutilation. Profiles on these sites may also include admissions or references to drug use, addictions, and possibly even crimes. Recently one search of online dating services produced a picture on Myspace the defendants 5 year old girl posing with a hand gun.
Obviously the parent that was supervising the child and took the picture and posted it on their secret Myspace page was in for a huge surprise at his custody hearing.

If you are involved in a custody battle and you suspect that your ex has an Internet porn addiction and may be involved in a secret life of extreme sexual fetish dating sites you can order an online infidelity investigation by searching Google. There are some very reliable services that offer such an investigation. You can begin your search for an investigator by googling "online Infidelity Investigation" . But before hiring a PI make sure they are considered an expert in this field. Do your homework by googling the name of the investigator and the name of they company. Make sure they are considered an expert in this field.

Prescription Drug Addiction: An Overview

Prescription Drug Addiction:  An Overview

Author: Damian Sofsian

It seems that prescription drugs are being prescribed more than ever.  Doctors prescribe drugs for pain, for mental health, and for insomnia.  The majority of the people who are prescribed these drugs use them responsibly, taking the correct dose just until the problem is gone.  However, there is a growing trend for people to misuse prescription drugs.  Many people use prescription drugs to get high or to feel good.  What they often don't know is that many of these drugs are highly addictive, and can have dire consequences if used improperly.

The three most commonly misused types of prescription drugs are opioids, central nervous system (CNS) depressants, and stimulants.

Opioids are usually prescribed for pain relief.  Some well-known opioids are codeine, morphine, and pills such as OxyContin, Vicodin, and Darvon.  Opioids are the most commonly misused of all prescription drugs, and are among the most dangerous.

CNS depressants are used to slow down brain functions.  They are frequently prescribed to relieve anxiety, stop panic attacks, and cure insomnia.  Some of the most common CNS depressants are Xanax, Valium, and Nembutal.  Many users enjoy the calming effect these drugs have and continue using them when they are no longer needed.  Misuse of CNS depressants can lead to addiction and other serious long-term problems.

Stimulants are another commonly abused class of prescription drug.  Stimulants speed up brain functions and are commonly prescribed for people with ADHD.  Some well-known stimulants are Ritalin and Dexedrine.  Although stimulants are less addictive than some other types of prescription drugs, they are still addictive and can lead to serious health problems when abused.

Prescription drug abuse is becoming a large problem.  Even as many celebrities' battles with prescription drug addiction have been in the news, many people continue to believe that these drugs are harmless.

Why Is It So Important For a Heroin Addict to Detox

Why Is It So Important For a Heroin Addict to Detox?

Author: wbdoyle

Heroin addiction has been around for a very long time. It is initially very often used to deaden pain in the form of morphine. The nasty consequences of morphine are addiction. Many people who use it initially for pain become addicted to it and cannot thereafter stop using it.

Heroin has been around for centuries. It's not a new addiction at all and is fast becoming more and more prevalent as the drug of choice amongst our youth. Anyone who has watched the many movies on heroin addiction will know that they may left that movie theater feeling somewhat upset about it. How dare those devils get our loved ones hooked onto such devastating drugs?

The typical "drug" movie leaves me feeling very incensed that such a thing could happen and, then to compound the destruction of the drug dealer on the street, many rehab facilities use derivatives of the very same drug to give the addict a heroin detox. In many cases, methadone is the drug of choice for this. The heroin addict is now set up to become addicted to a legalized drug. Not any different to the heroin except its more addictive, but it's an approved drug.

Anyone who has a loved one they desperately want to help may go hunting all the net to find solutions and there are millions offered up to view. The problem is how do you know what to do? Which one? This can stick you in a very serious maybe. Maybe this one will work, maybe that one will work. Indecision, indecision.

The problem is we don't always know someone who has had to get a loved one through heroin rehab or heroin detox and we very often turn to our local doctor for advice. This may or may not be a good idea, depending on that doctor's experience with heroin addiction. Most often, the recommendation may be a medical "think" and off the heroin addict goes to get his new fix, methadone or a similar heroin derivative.

Other people turn to the psychologist's solution that it's all mental. Or even the psychiatrist's solution and evaluation that you have an "addictive brain" and nothing will work except some or other chemical restraint.

The medical and psychologist solutions have but an inkling of the problem and their success rates probably measure less than 10 risk. So, this solution is dubious.

The real solution is a heroin detox. A key factor in getting a heroin addict rehabilitated is getting the heroin or methadone particles out of their body. Well, that means we're back to the medical modality, doesn't it?

Absolutely not. How about a heroin detox program that follows an exact science and that has a 70 - 80% success rate? Heroin detox is vitally important for any heroin addict as the heroin particles lodge in the fatty tissue of the body. In order to dislodge and eliminate them, the heroin addict needs to literally sweat it out BUT without the additional stress of further drugs.

This is so key to their rehabilitation, that I cannot emphasize enough its importance. The program that helped me recover does exactly that. Utilizing very exact vitamins and minerals, along with good protein, lots of salads and oils, heroin addict is put through the program to arrive at the other end without the drug residues. This is very important as those very residues can spark off later addiction if left in the body.

The heroin addict now feels fresh and bright, like a young kid again. Energetic revitalized and ready to continue with the rest of the program, which deal with the reasons why addiction became an option in the first place - the mental aspect.

The addict is now on the road to recovery. With the rest of the program completed, you will have your loved one back again, intact with a bright and happy future

Methadone Maintenance--A Tool For Heroin Recovery

Methadone Maintenance -- A Tool For Heroin Addiction Recovery

Author: Lisa Simmons

For heroin addicts, methadone maintenance can be an effective first step toward recovery and getting free of opiate addiction. Methadone is a legal opiate drug that's dispensed in a clinic setting to addicts as a substitute for heroin.

A dose of methadone lasts for 24 hours, so the addict can feel comfortable enough all day to begin rebuilding a normal life. Methadone also has the advantage of eliminating drug dealers, crime, shared needles, risk of HIV infection, and the need to get a fix every few hours. Methadone treatment is generally affordable and many clinics feature a sliding scale that corresponds to income. Some state and county programs are even free for residents.

Heroin addiction is difficult to recover from. An addict may be unable to function effectively for a long time after withdrawal and experience a constant temptation to relapse. Methadone clinics, by treating the drug craving, allow the addict to feel comfortable while taking steps to get their lives back on track.

Methadone clinics are staffed by addictions professionals who are available to assist the patient with the task of recovery. Doctors, nurses, and counselors are available to provide health care, support, and guidance about how to rebuild a life. The addict can get a job without the interference of cravings and earn money with which to maintain a stable home and pay for other necessities.

When life is stabilized, an addict has two choices. They can remain on methadone indefinitely, even for life. The only requirements are paying for treatment and not using other drugs. Drinking alcohol is permitted, but a positive drug test for marijuana, cocaine, or other opiates can result in a loss of privileges or dismissal from the program.

In many cases an addict stabilized on methadone can live a normal and healthy life. Methadone has no harmful side effects and causes no long-term health problems. Being on methadone can be like being on any other prescription drug that's necessary to maintain health and functioning. In the beginning, addicts are required to report to the clinic daily. After a period of time with good behavior, addicts can earn weekly methadone take-home bottles, sometimes as many as 6 per week.

How to Get Rid of Addiction and Abuse

How to Get Rid of Addiction and Abuse

Author: Lori Prokop

Tell me, does this describe someone you know?

Some people who feel inferior use an addiction to try to overcome weaknesses, especially in times of increased stress or deep inner conflict. A person's inner inferiority complex reveals itself in his or her actions such as addiction, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, child abuse, compulsive eating, blame and aggression among others.

No successful person desires a destructive addiction. What people who choose addiction or abuse really want is the power and ability to create better lives.

Fearing they do not have this power to improve their lives, you will hear these people use excuses and blame to justify their addiction and abuse and protect what little dignity they feel they have left.

If you find yourself or others dealing with addiction or abuse, instead of justifying or blaming, ask the following questions:

Do I really want healing and resolution for this addiction or abuse?

Am I willing to improve myself to achieve healing?
Do I realize I can't control others? The only one I can control is me.

Am I willing to take the first step for myself and get rid of my addiction, abuse excuses, blame and other destructive habits to achieve peace and happiness?

Alcohol abuse and drug abuse are common crutches today. I have met many people who feel tongue-tied or awkward at social events. They find a few cocktails or beers "give them a lift" turning them from introvert to extrovert. There are many people who drink to feel better about themselves, even to the point of abuse or addiction.

For an article entitled Lori Prokop Interviews the Experts, one doctor said to me, "It's sad but true. A seemingly innocent use of alcohol can quickly and easily become an addiction, especially if people perceive they are someway 'improved' when they drink."

Alcohol abuse, drug abuse and any other addiction are serious forms of personal loss. The people, who depend on any exterior addiction or abuse rather than improving their perceived weaknesses and healing their pains, are beaten from the start.

Such a person can find healing. They must get rid of the addiction and abuse, find a healing system which works and resolve their fears and pains.
